Container lines push low-sulfur fuel fees

Bunker surcharges have been revised by carriers to mitigate the effect of the IMO sulfur cap of 5.0 percent from Jan.1, 2020, which could add up tp $15 billion to container shipping's annual fuel bill. Carriers have no option but to directly pass on the costs to shippers and have already begun to phase in the new surcharge formulas to prepare the market for 2020.
